Non-Invasive Spinal Cord Stimulation — A new approach to spinal cord neuromodulation, without surgery and without implanted electrodes
OpenXstim is a programmable transcutaneous electrical stimulation platform designed to deliver electrical stimulation through surface electrodes placed on the body, targeting neural circuits associated with the spinal cord.
The device was designed by Dr Monzurul Alam at the University of Sydney, Australia, to expand access to neuromodulation research and treatment worldwide. The open-source nature of the stimulator enables flexible programming of a wide range of stimulation parameters, allowing clinicians and researchers to identify optimal settings and tailor stimulation protocols to the needs of each individual receiving therapy.
Unlike conventional epidural spinal cord stimulation, which requires the surgical implantation of electrodes, non-invasive spinal cord stimulation delivers electrical current through the skin, providing a completely external approach to neuromodulation.
How Does It Work?
OpenXstim delivers precisely controlled electrical stimulation through surface electrodes positioned over selected spinal regions. The stimulation is intended to modulate spinal neural networks and increase the excitability of neural pathways, potentially helping the nervous system respond more effectively during active rehabilitation.
This approach is currently being investigated for neurological conditions including:
- Spinal cord injury
- Paralysis and motor impairment
- Stroke
- Cerebral palsy
- Other neurological disorders affecting motor function
Research published in the Journal of Neural Engineering has demonstrated the technical capability of OpenXstim for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation. Preliminary testing in individuals with complete spinal cord injury showed indications of functional improvement. (PubMed)
The NuRaX Approach
At NuRaX, OpenXstim technology is incorporated into a structured neuromodulation and rehabilitation programme, with stimulation parameters tailored according to each individual's neurological condition, injury level, and rehabilitation goals.
The objective is not simply to stimulate the spinal cord, but to facilitate neural plasticity and support intensive, task-specific rehabilitation.
Non-Invasive. Programmable. Research-Driven.
Transcutaneous stimulation at NuRaX is helping advance the future of non-invasive spinal cord neuromodulation.
Important: OpenXstim is a research and clinical neuromodulation platform. Neuromodulation interventions should be performed under appropriate clinical supervision and in accordance with applicable safety, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
