What is the LamiStem Technique?
On behalf of the NuRaX team and our Chief Prof. Dr. Pritam Majumdar, the LamiStem is the most advanced personalized treatment for spinal cord injury recovery. Lami-Stem is a unique procedure designed by NuRaX Clinic — a global leader in innovative spinal cord treatments aimed at recovery.
The procedure includes one small incision on the particular region of the spine, which involves injection of a small section of the patient's spine called a 'Lamina', followed by intra-spinal cord injections of patented hAFSC Cryotherapy. The LamiStem targets the precise location of spinal cord tissue damage using the AFSCs and delivers the maximum number of impact right at the injured location.
Safety and Effectiveness
The LamiStem procedure is suitable for complete or incomplete spinal injury. Especially patients with injuries at T11-L1 will benefit the most, but lower injuries are also suitable (L2 to L5). Results are measured by bodily functions regained and symptoms reduced. This treatment also helps patients with various neurological disorders.
Cryotherapy using hAFSCs or MSCs are increasingly popular due to the absence of side effects and high success rates. For spinal cord injury, it is most effective when injected as directly and as locally as possible, which is the case with LamiStem. Lamicentric plus intra-spinal hAFSC injections with special biomolecules allow for direct targeting of the injured spinal tissue, so people suffering the symptoms of SCI can experience improvements in motor and sensory function.
Who Is Eligible?
LamiStem eligibility criteria:
- Complete or incomplete spinal injuries
- Injury between T11 and L1 level (in some cases L2-L5 also suitable)
- A small group of patients receiving Epidural Stimulation may also qualify for LamiStem treatment
Additional conditions treated: Autism spectrum, Cerebral Palsy, Post-Stroke patients, and Multiple Sclerosis patients can also receive this treatment at our center.
How the Procedure Works
Pre-operative Assessment
Comprehensive evaluation with advanced imaging (MRI and CT) to precisely map the spinal cord injury site. This detailed mapping guides surgical planning and determines the optimal entry point for cell delivery.
Direct Stem Cell Application
hAFSC stem cells and growth factors with special biomolecules are applied directly to the spinal cord injury site through the surgical window. The direct intra-spinal cord application ensures maximum cell viability and engraftment.
Expected Benefits
As a result of physical, autonomic and sensory improvements, patients may see the following benefits:
- The ability to stand and take assisted steps
- Voluntary limb movement
- Increased strength and stamina
- Enhanced sensation
- Stabilised blood pressure
- Better temperature regulation
- Relief from neuropathic pain
- Improved bladder and bowel function
- Improved sexual function
Many patients also see benefits to their mental health, regaining feelings of purpose, hope and potential for a more independent life (results depend on each patient's training post-treatment).
Recovery and Rehabilitation
The length of time in procedure varies depending on a number of factors, such as the location of injury and type of anaesthesia required. Post-operative recovery varies but can be as short as a few days. The procedure is followed by 30 to 60 days of intensive physical therapy, led by the NuRaX rehab in-house specialist physio team. This helps patients to get back on their feet and regain various functions.
Physical therapy is focused on maximizing functional recovery, and regular follow-up assessments are conducted to track progress and adjust rehabilitation protocols as needed. The NuRaX rehabilitation team works closely with each patient to develop a personalized recovery plan.
Why NuRaX for LamiStem
The LamiStem Technique is a proprietary procedure developed at NuRaX, and it is performed exclusively by an experienced neurosurgical team with deep expertise in both surgical and regenerative approaches to neurological conditions.
At NuRaX, the LamiStem procedure is combined with comprehensive rehabilitation programs tailored to each patient's needs. The center is committed to ongoing research and protocol refinement, continually improving outcomes through clinical data and scientific advancement.
For patients who may benefit from multiple therapeutic modalities, the LamiStem Technique can be combined with epidural stimulation for enhanced outcomes — leveraging the regenerative benefits of stem cells alongside the functional activation provided by neuromodulation.
