Sacral Nerve Stimulation (InterStim)

Advanced neuromodulation therapy for bladder and bowel dysfunction through targeted electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves.

Sacral Nerve Stimulation (InterStim)

What is Sacral Nerve Stimulation?

Also known as InterStim therapy, sacral nerve stimulation delivers mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves (S2-S4). These nerves control the bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor muscles. By modulating the neural communication between the brain and these organs, normal function can be restored. It is a well-established therapy with over 25 years of clinical use worldwide.

Conditions Treated

Sacral nerve stimulation is clinically proven for a range of pelvic floor and urological conditions:

  • Overactive bladder (urge urinary incontinence)
  • Non-obstructive urinary retention
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Interstitial cystitis / painful bladder syndrome
  • GynoModulation applications (pioneered by Dr. Ulduz Jafarova at NuRaX)

How InterStim Works

The InterStim system consists of a thin lead and a small neurostimulator that work together to restore normal nerve activity:

  • A thin lead is placed near the sacral nerve through a small incision.
  • The lead is connected to a small neurostimulator implanted in the upper buttock area.
  • The device delivers mild electrical pulses that restore normal nerve activity.
  • The stimulation helps the brain and pelvic organs communicate properly.
  • Patients can adjust stimulation levels with a handheld programmer.

Two-Stage Evaluation

InterStim therapy follows a proven two-stage approach to ensure the best possible outcomes:

Stage 1 — Test Stimulation:

  • A temporary lead is placed near the sacral nerve.
  • The patient undergoes a 1-2 week evaluation period at home.
  • Symptoms are tracked in a daily diary throughout the test period.
  • Success is defined as 50% or greater improvement in symptoms.

Stage 2 — Permanent Implant:

  • If the test stimulation is successful, the permanent system is implanted.
  • A small neurostimulator is placed in the upper buttock area.
  • The procedure takes approximately 1 hour.
  • Patients typically return to normal activities within days.

Expected Results

Clinical studies and real-world outcomes demonstrate significant benefits for appropriately selected patients:

  • 50-80% improvement in symptoms for most patients
  • Significantly reduced urgency and frequency
  • Improved quality of life and confidence
  • Reversible if needed — the device can be removed at any time
  • Long battery life (up to 15 years with rechargeable models)
  • MRI-compatible options available
